SHIP’S LOG, WRITINGS AT SEA
Short Story: "Maria," by Diana Rowe
EXCERPT of Maria FROM
SHIP’S LOG, WRITINGS AT SEA,
When Maria was in her hiding
place, she’d stretch her neck just high enough to look out the window. Across a
courtyard overflowing with prickly cactus, she could always see the top of the
cemetery. Inside the gap in the fence, the tips of white crosses rose. She’d
never stepped inside, but when she rode the school bus, she passed the front
gate. That was when she noticed all different sizes of rectangular boxes,
mostly white, stacked on each other with a big cross on the top, like Christmas
presents under the sky. Hanging near the crosses, multi-colored flowers picked
from the island painted the starkness of the cemetery, making it feel more alive
than lifeless.
